Dolly Parton Inspires a Reading Revolution with Millions of Free Books

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library annually distributes over 24 million free books to children, inspiring a push for expanded funding in New York to boost literacy.

In addition to her many Grammy awards and significant contributions to vaccine funding, Dolly Parton, the legendary country music star, has launched a remarkable initiative dedicated to literacy.

Through her efforts, over 2 million free books reach young readers every month.

Advocacy for Expansion

In New York, advocates for literacy are calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to direct state funding toward expanding the Imagination Library to every corner of the state.

They envision a partnership similar to the one that California Governor Gavin Newsom established last year, which would help more children access these valuable resources while easing the financial burdens faced by local nonprofits.

The operational aspects of the program are managed by Parton’s Dollywood Foundation.

However, essential costs such as postage and book purchases fall on community organizations, including the United Way, which play a crucial role in making this initiative a success.

Progress Across the States

Currently, twelve states have implemented funding models that support the program in all their counties, while nine others are working diligently to broaden their own initiatives.

New Mexico is also preparing to launch its program soon, as reported by the Imagination Library.

This August, Parton celebrated nearly 30 years of her literacy program, which began in Tennessee—the very state where she first set this ambitious vision into motion.

Measuring Impact

In Ohio, where a partnership with the Imagination Library exists, the nonprofit Literacy Cooperative conducts annual assessments to measure the program’s effectiveness.

Its CEO, Robert Paponetti, pointed out that surveys primarily aim to uncover whether children show a heightened enthusiasm for reading thanks to the books they’ve received.

The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, revealing a significant increase in children’s interest in reading.

Through her commitment to fostering a love of literacy, Dolly Parton’s initiative continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of countless children throughout the nation.
