Over 500 licensed childcare spaces have been directly impacted—nearly 7% of all facilities in the region.
Among the individuals grappling with this adversity are Blanca Carrillo and her daughter, Aurys Hernandez.
Their Altadena home, which served as the heart of their daycare, was consumed by the Eaton Fire, leaving them both homeless and without work.
This tragic event highlights a significant upheaval in their lives.
Carrillo, through the help of a family translator, conveyed the shock of losing everything overnight.

Childcare System Struggling Before the Fires
The devastation brought by these wildfires compounds an already troubling situation within the Los Angeles childcare system.
This sector was previously grappling with a shortage of providers and insufficient funding, as emphasized by Debra Colman, the director of the L.A. County Office for the Advancement of Early Care and Education.
The existing facilities are inadequate to meet the needs of over 750,000 young children, with fewer than 8,000 licensed facilities in place.
This situation results in a staggering ratio of nearly 94 children for every available facility.
The fires have indiscriminately affected various essential resources.
Notably, local gems like the B’nai Simcha Jewish Community Preschool and the Altadena Children’s Center were completely lost, resulting in the elimination of safe spaces for children.
Shonna Clark, director of the Altadena Children’s Center, mentioned that many families connected to the center also lost their homes.

Immediate Recovery Needs
Leslie Carmell from Options for Learning stated that addressing the immediate challenges for childcare providers is critical for effective recovery.
The need for affordable housing is particularly pressing in Southern California, where such options are often hard to find.
Questions surrounding licensing, emergency financial aid, and essential resources are at the forefront of discussions, echoing support systems established during the pandemic.
Toni Boucher, who formerly directed the Altadena Children’s Center, emphasized that many childcare programs run on shoestring budgets.
She called for continued government support similar to that provided during the pandemic to help sustain and rebuild lost childcare facilities within the community.
Despite the daunting situation, the pandemic fostered stronger connections among childcare providers, now proving invaluable.
Susan Wood, executive director of the Children’s Center at Caltech, shared that ongoing collaboration—initiated through virtual meetings during the pandemic—continues to support coordinated responses in the aftermath of the fires.
While some providers focus on reconstructing their spaces, others are stepping up to broaden their services for families in immediate need of childcare.
Take Jodi Mason, who runs a home daycare in Pasadena.
Recently, she evacuated with several children amid the chaos, yet she quickly reopened her daycare and is now welcoming new children whose previous childcare arrangements were lost to the flames.
Mason is acutely aware of the emotional difficulties that children face when uprooted from their familiar surroundings.
She is dedicated to offering these children the love and support they need during this trying time.
