As concerned parents and guardians of both current and former students at Mossbourne Community Academy and Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy, including those with special educational needs, we feel compelled to address the recent coverage in the Observer.
We believe that these articles overlook the rich tapestry of experiences and viewpoints within our school community, which encompasses parents, students, and educators alike.
Safeguarding and Achievements
It’s crucial to emphasize that the Department for Education recently investigated various allegations surrounding safeguarding practices and ultimately found no evidence to back up those claims.
Moreover, data from the DfE indicates that both Mossbourne Victoria Park Academy and Mossbourne Community Academy consistently rank among the top 10 out of more than 6,500 schools in terms of “Progress 8”—a key metric that assesses student progress across eight qualifications for students aged 14 to 16.
Particularly impressive is the fact that both academies are positioned in the top five when we consider schools that cater to over 35% disadvantaged students.
Mossbourne Community Academy even claims the title of the top institution nationally for Progress 8, specifically among schools with a higher percentage of disadvantaged students, exceeding 50%.
Notably, students with special educational needs (SEND) and those who start with lower attainment levels tend to achieve remarkable outcomes as well.
Impact on Students
The influence of Mossbourne schools on young lives is profound and transformative.
These institutions have carved out a reputation for success, thanks in no small part to their dedicated and skilled educators.
Their unwavering commitment to providing equitable opportunities for children from all backgrounds deserves recognition and respect.
It’s vital to recall that Mossbourne Community Academy was born from the remnants of a previously underperforming school, and both academies proudly serve a diverse local demographic, determined to deliver top-notch education and promote success for each student.
Community Engagement and Improvement
Admittedly, while certain policies may come across as strict and some areas could benefit from further refinement, the sentiment among the vast majority of students is one of thriving, happiness, and strong support.
Acknowledging that no school is perfect, we are eager to engage in dialogue that aims to propose constructive improvements to the operations of these institutions.
Together, we can continue to enhance the educational experience for our children.
