Expanding Educational Opportunities
Having spent 15 years working alongside the National School Choice Week organizing team, I have witnessed an incredible transformation in our celebrations.
What began with just 150 events in 2011 has burgeoned into over 27,000 gatherings by 2025.
This growth reflects a wider movement dedicated to expanding K-12 educational opportunities across the country.
Today, parents are confronted with an unparalleled array of educational choices.
In the past year alone, 16 states increased access to various options, spanning traditional public schools, charter schools, magnet schools, private institutions, online learning platforms, homeschooling, and alternative educational settings.
This follows a noteworthy trend from 2023, when 20 states made significant enhancements to their school choice provisions.
Barriers to Access
Despite the growing opportunities, the reality is more complex.
Recent research from the National School Choice Awareness Foundation, the nonprofit I represent, reveals that 60% of U.S. parents explored different educational settings for at least one of their children in the last year.
While this interest has stabilized from a post-COVID peak of 72% in 2024, it remains a significant figure.
Interestingly, discussions among parents about educational choices with friends and family rose by 10% this year, reaching a total of 60%.
However, a concerning trend has emerged: out of the families seeking new educational pathways, only 28% followed through and enrolled their children in a different school.
Numerous obstacles still stand in the way of parents embracing these choices.
Transportation challenges, financial constraints, confusion about enrollment processes, and lack of time often deter families from making transitions to new educational environments.
Collaborative Efforts for Change
As advocates for school choice, we must recognize these hurdles and work diligently to provide the necessary resources and support to help families make informed decisions.
It’s vital that we align the expanding variety of educational options with comprehensive assistance, allowing families to navigate their choices with confidence.
To play our part, the National School Choice Awareness Foundation has shifted its focus beyond simply promoting School Choice Week.
Each January, we offer an expansive online collection of educational resources available in both English and Spanish, designed to help families understand their options.
Programs like “Navigate School Choice” and “Conoce tus Opciones Escolares” aim to empower millions of families with the knowledge needed to explore their educational possibilities.
Yet, the responsibility of supporting families cannot rest on one organization alone.
Community groups such as Families Empowered, GuidED Florida, Love Your School, NavigatED Arizona, and PA Families for Education Choice, joined together under the newly formed Navigate School Choice Network, are making significant strides by providing personalized assistance to parents.
The school choice movement requires these grassroots organizations to thrive.
Communicating effectively with families and guiding them through the wearying task of finding and enrolling in suitable educational settings is just as important as policy advocacy.
Sadly, many organizations dedicated to this vital mission encounter obstacles not because of a lack of passion or effectiveness, but due to funding challenges that don’t fit conventional nonprofit models.
As we come together to celebrate National School Choice Week, we invite 9 million students, parents, educators, and advocates to participate in events nationwide.
Yet, we remain aware that much work lies ahead.
By collaborating, we can bridge the gap between available opportunities and real access, guiding families on their educational journeys and ensuring that every child has the chance to achieve a quality education and a bright future.
